Abstract

At present, society is consuming natural resources
faster than the Earth can replenish them, due to the
imbalance of the environmental carrying capacity,
problems caused by the development model and
anthropogenic activities. Sustainability is presented
as an alternative to prevent, solve and mitigate
environmental, social and economic problems.
Higher Education Institutions are responsible for
participating in this. This work identifies indicators
to build the sustainability index in the substantive
functions (teaching, research, extension and
management) of four academic units of the
Autonomous University of Guerrero: Regional
Development Sciences Unit, Tropical Diseases,
Academic Unit of Tourism and Preparatory No. 2.
The group discussion and analysis of specialists
resulted in the determination of 9 environmental, 11
social and 5 economic indicators. With this base,
five instruments were designed and validated for
directors of academic units, officials, teachers,
educational program coordinators, students, and
administrative, trust and management staff; were
applied to 124 workers and 511 students. It is
considered that the techniques used were adequate
to define environmental, social and economic
variables and indicators.
