Backyard livestock production in rural zones
represent a strategy of supply and self-consumption
to families in rural environments. In this study
livestock backyards, located in Palo Solo, are
categorized. The information was obtain through
structured interviews. The information collected
show that housewives operate chores in this kind of
spaces. Pigs are not being treated against diseases,
however, cows are treated against horn diseases.
Avian flu is the main disease among birds, which is
treated with Emicina, being this disease their main
death cause, corpses are mainly dumped into the
woods. Corn is the main component in animals’ diet.
Birds (hens, ducks and turkeys) are usually left in
open spaces while pigs remain in corrals. The
ultimate purpose of the backyard production is selfconsumption. As conclusion; backyards integrate the
owners’ diet while supporting their economy
